The completion of the Santa Cruz (Lata) Airport upgrade is expected to improve air connectivity, strengthen aviation safety and open new economic opportunities for Solomon Islands' remote Temotu Province.
Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Communication and Aviation Frederick Kologeto said the upgraded airport represents a significant investment in connectivity, public safety and access to essential services.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony in Lata, Kologeto said reliable airport infrastructure was essential to connecting remote island communities with the rest of the country.
Delivered under the Solomon Islands Road and Aviation Project 2 (SIRAP 2), the upgrade includes runway surfacing, installation of an Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) system and construction of a new airport terminal building.
Kologeto said the sealed runway would provide a more durable and weather-resistant surface, improving the safety and reliability of aircraft operations.
The new lighting system would further strengthen operational safety and support compliance with applicable civil aviation regulations.
He described Santa Cruz as the Eastern Gateway to Solomon Islands, citing its potential to facilitate regional cooperation, trade and economic development.
The airport upgrade is also expected to support implementation of the Mota Lava Treaty between Solomon Islands and Vanuatu by improving connectivity between Temotu Province and Vanuatu's Torba Province.
"Improved connectivity has the potential to facilitate cross-border trade, encourage the movement of people and goods, promote tourism and strengthen relationships between neighbouring island communities," Kologeto said.
He acknowledged the World Bank, government agencies, the Temotu Provincial Government, project teams and contractors for their contributions to the project.
Kologeto also urged government agencies, service providers and local communities to work together to maintain and protect public infrastructure for future generations.
The airport's completion is expected to strengthen Temotu's links with the rest of Solomon Islands while providing improved transport infrastructure to support tourism, trade and cross-border economic activity.
